We’re two weeks into April, and while there’s been a lack of those eponymous rainstorms, we do have some great manga releases showering onto shelves this month. Let’s take a look at my top 3 titles for this month!
My Boy, Vol. 1
Original Title: 私の少年
Author: Hitomi Takano
Date: April 10, 2018
Publisher: Vertical Inc.
Buy: Amazon
From the publisher: An award-winner and top seller in Japan, this provocative new manga handles its controversial subject with insight and sensitivity.
Satoko Tawada, a 30-year-old office worker at a sporting goods company, encounters Mashuu Hayami, a 12-year-old boy, playing soccer in a park at night. She was treated cruelly by a former lover, he is dealing with a high-handed and uninvolved family. Both are burdened with loneliness, and they sense that the other has something that they’re searching for…
My Boy released yesterday, and while I still haven’t ordered a copy, I’m anxious to see what the controversy’s all about. No doubt, some people will find this title problematic, based on the premise alone. As for me, I’ll give this a read before scouring the Internet for reviews.
Dead Dead Demon’s Dedede Destruction, Vol. 1
Original Title: デッドデッドデーモンズデデデデデストラクション
Author: Inio Asano
Date: April 17, 2018
Publisher: Viz Signature
Buy: Amazon
From the publisher: The Japan Self-Defense Forces are still looking for a way to combat the alien threat, but so far conventional weapons have had no effect. Maybe it’s time to try something unconventional.
Meanwhile, Kadode Koyama and her best friend avidly track the aliens’ movements on social media and less enthusiastically study for college entrance exams. When the end of the world looms overhead, you learn to take things one step at a time.
Inio Asano doesn’t shy away from the eccentric, so it’s no surprise his next release in the US centers around aliens and high school girls. Expect his signature blend of realistic and surrealistic artwork, and make note of that Explicit Content label: if Dedede is anything like his other manga, then we’re in for a raunchy ride.
As Miss Beelzebub Likes, Vol. 1
Original Title: ベルゼブブ嬢のお気に召すまま。
Author: matoba
Date: April 24, 2018
Publisher: Yen Press
Buy: Amazon
From the publisher: Beelzebub, the formidable right hand of Satan, commands fear and respect throughout Pandemonium. What her underlings don’t realize, though, is that she’s an airhead with a love for all that is fluffy and adorable! The only thing she might enjoy more is teasing her new attendant, Mullin, who is learning that serving Beelzebub is both heaven and hell…
It seems devil-themed manga is this year’s trend, and I’m totally here for it. Beelzebub, one of most powerful demons, drawn as a dainty young lady? Yes, please. And what are those cute marshmallow things on her head? I want twenty.
