Days are getting shorter, nights are getting longer, and boy is it getting colder! With winter fast approaching and the holidays right around the corner, November is the perfect month to get cozy with some good books. Here are my top three manga picks for this month!
Can I Kiss You Every Day?, Vol. 1
Original Title: 毎日キスしていいですか?
Author: HATSUHARU
US Publisher: Kodansha Comics
Release Date: 11/6/2018
Purchase: Amazon (digital only)
From the publisher: Kurumi lives under one roof with her father and her overprotective brother, Ataka. One day, she reunites with Nagio, her childhood friend. Now a strapping young man, Nagio doesn’t hesitate at all to make his advances, much to Kurumi’s dismay! He would kiss her out of nowhere and tell her how he has always liked her, totally having her wrapped around his finger. While Kurumi didn’t like it at first, she eventually finds herself heads over heels for Nagio! This is a childhood friend romance story starring a black-hearted yet loving boy, filled with sweet and passionate kisses!
A digital first release from Kodansha Comics! I have to admit, I don’t have high expectations for this title, just based on its premise. But that doesn’t mean I think it’ll be bad! I’m a huge fan of unapologetically smutty shojo, so I’m here for it, no doubt.
You can read a free preview on Kodansha’s site.
Ran and the Gray World, Vol. 1
Original Title: 乱と灰色の世界
Author: Aki Irie
US Publisher: Viz Media
Release Date: 11/20/2018
Purchase: Amazon
From the publisher: Ran Uruma can’t wait to grow up and become a sorceress like her mother, so with the help of a magical pair of sneakers, she transforms into an adult and sets off! Her father and older brother Jin try to keep her home safe, but Ran is determined to advance her powers and have adventures of her own!
Even though Ran looks like an adult during her transformation, she doesn’t really know what perils the outside world holds. When she meets rich playboy Otaro Mikado, does she gain a friend or foe?
I know there’s that whole “don’t judge a book by its cover” cliche, but come on, this manga looks absolutely delightful! Ever since Viz announced this license, I’ve been intrigued. Aki Irie is a fantastic mangaka with a unique aesthetic that I find refreshing compared to a lot of manga that’s come out in recent years. This is a release-day buy for me.
Pez
Author: Hiroyuki Asada
US Publisher: Denpa Books
Release Date: 11/22/2018
Purchase: Amazon
From the publisher: In this full-color collection set in a post-apocalyptic world, Pez and Decosuke cross this now desolate landscape searching for signs of life. Along the way, they experience a number of moments that remind them of what it meant to be alive and why their lives are so precious.
This short manga (all in color!) had its first English release in ROBOT, an anthology series distributed by Digital Manga Publishing in the mid 2000s. Now, industry newcomer Denpa Books brings us an updated edition as one of their first official offerings.
You might recognize Hiroyuki Asada as the mangaka behind Tegami Bachi, published back in 2009 by Viz Media. As a Tegami Bachi fan, I’m really excited to read this collected version of Pez. There’s no doubt Asada’s crazy-cool art will shine in such an avant-garde title.
